Towards best use and regulatory acceptance of generic physiologically based kinetic (PBK) models for in vitro‑to‑in vivo extrapolation (IVIVE) in chemical risk assessment

In a Nutshell

Scientists at a workshop organised by the Centre for chemical safety assessment (ECETOC) explored how to use mathematical modelling to help extrapolate data from laboratory experiments on chemical reactions into live human or animal responses. In a paper published by the scientific journal Archives of Toxicology, the scientific experts proposed a number of steps that aim to increase EU regulators’ confidence in what are known as ‘generic physiologically based kinetic models’, so reducing the need for animal testing in chemical safety assessments.
